(ii) An Archaeology Trail -takes the form of a series of full size replicas of historical monuments commonly found in South West Cork including a Gallaun (standing stone), a Fulachda Fiadh (Ancient cooking Place), a Stone circle and a replica of Castleventry old Cemetery.
This Cemetery site, the original of which is located near the source of the Arigideen River, is unusual, in that it was built originally in early Christian times as a Ringfort, or defended farmstead. In medieval times a Church was built within the enclosure and later people began burying their dead in the site. The replica includes the following features. A circular ringfort bank, a Church ruin, headstones, tombs, a holy well and a watch house ruin.
The
New 1921 Trail, provides the visitor with a
unique insight into the War of Independence and Civil
War in West Cork. It takes the form of a full size
replica of an Ambush Site complete with military vehicle
and other features. |
